Aug. 3, 2009

Abuja, Nigeria - Purdue University track and field standout Adetayo Adesanya won the 2009 Nigeria Mobil Trials, on July 25, earning the national title with a mark of 2.15 meters (7-00.50). Adesanya was a 2009 All-American for the Boilermakers in the same event at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Adesanya ended the seven-year Nigerian high jump reign of countryman Obiora Arinze, who won the Mobil championship consecutively from 2002 to 2008, despite being short of his career-best of 2.20 meters (7-02.50). Adesanya's top mark earned him fifth place at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, putting the Boilermakers in the scoring column at nationals for the first time since 2005.

However, he remains short of the World Championship "B" standard of 2.27 meters (7-05.25), and will return to West Lafayette for the start of the 2009-10 academic year and resume training for his final season at Purdue.
