CARSON, Calif. - Freshman Kara Patterson clinched her spot at the Pan American Junior Championships after scoring a second-place throw in the javelin Saturday morning at the USA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.
The Pan American games take place in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, July 28 to 31.
Patterson's runner-up throw was measured at 50.08 meters (164 feet - 4 inches), which she accomplished on her first attempt. Her remaining throws were measured at 42.64, 40.15, 47.52 and 42.02 meters; she fouled on her second throw.
High schooler Rachel Yurkovich won the junior javelin competition with a distance of 50.62 (166-01).
Senior sprinter Kenneth Baxter grabbed the final qualifying spot for the semifinals of the 200-meter dash, finishing 18th in 21.00 seconds. Baxter finished his weekend, moving up one place with a 17th-place mark of 21.25 seconds during Saturday's second round of competition.
