Eber, Bunch To Compete At NCAA Championship

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Two Boilermakers will wrap up the 2011-12 athletic year for Purdue this week. Track and field stars Leah Eber and Dani Bunch will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday and Friday, respectively, in Des Moines, Iowa.

Eber qualified for the championships with a fourth place finish at the NCAA East Prelim. The Boilermaker senior leapt 6.31m (20-08.50) on her second attempt before passing on her final two jumps. Eber currently has the nation’s 13th best mark with a season-best of 6.45m (21-02.00). A total of 24 jumpers will compete in the women’s long jump on Thursday. Eber has the top mark in the Big Ten, though just one other conference jumper qualified for the championships with Mara Griva of Nebraska. Lorraine Ugen of TCU has the nation’s top mark. The freshman has a season-best distance of 6.83m (22-05.00). Tori Bowie of Southern Miss has the second best mark nationally. The senior jumped 6.78m (22-03.00). Thursday’s long jump will take place at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Bunch will compete in the shot put on Friday at 6 p.m. ET. She will be among 24 competitors to vie for the National Title. The Purdue sophomore qualified by finished eighth in the event at the NCAA East Prelims. There, Bunch threw a best of 15.97m (52-04.75). Bunch has the nation’s 20th best mark in the event with a season-best of 16.46m (54-00.00). Tia Brooks of Oklahoma leads the way nationally with a season-best of 18.47m (60-07.25). The Big Ten has three representatives at the meet with Bunch boasting the top mark. The other two qualifiers are Taylor Smith of Wisconsin and Kyla Buckley of Indiana.
