Tuesday Track Tidbits: Part 15

This is the 15th edition of Purdue Track Tidbits. The weekly update features upcoming news and events, national standings, top performers, school records, and other happenings within the program. These `tidbits' are released each Tuesday of the season. This week’s edition gives a quick look at the upcoming Big Ten Outdoor Championships.

Rewriting The Top Fives
-The teams have combined for eight marks that rank in the top five in program history and another that is sixth.
-Vanessa McLeod broke the school record in the 800m run. She ran a time of 2:06.36 which broke Brooke Woodruff's previous program-record time of 2:06.69. McLeod, a freshman, now owns the indoor and outdoor school records in the event.
-Geoff Davis tied the program’s second-best high jump mark, a mark he set a sophomore, when he cleared 2.24m (7-04.25) on April 12th.
-Andre’ Peart ran the third-fastest 400-meter hurdles time as he posted a mark of 51.72 seconds. That time is just 0.34 second behind the school record.
-Nikki Nunn leapt the third-best long jump distance as she jumped 6.32m (20-09.00).
-Dani Bunch has what would be the third-best shot put distance in program history as her best this season is 16.33m (53-07.00). However, she already has the second-best mark in program history, 16.46m (54-00.00), which she threw last season.
-Chukwuebuka Enekwechi threw the fourth-best hammer throw mark in Purdue lore with a toss of 64.94m (213-01).
-Jakob Engel tied the fourth-best shot put mark in program history. The senior threw 18.69m (61-04.00) in March.
-Cale Allen ran the fifth-fastest 10k time in program history with a time of 29:33.68.
-Tyler Wynn tied the fifth-fastest 1,500-meter time when he posted 3:47.79 on April 26.
-Blair Doney has the sixth-fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase time in program history. She ran 10:39.25 and is less than five seconds outside the top five.

Boilers Among Nation's Best
-Purdue has five individuals with top-25 marks in the country this season including two in the top 10.
-Nunn’s mark in the long jump is the 12th-best in the country.
-Davis has the fifth-best high jump mark.
-Engel’s shot put mark is 17th in the.
-Enekwechi has the 19th-best hammer throw mark in the country.
-Blair threw the 25th-best shot put distance in the country.

Vying For NCAA Qualification
The Boilermakers have more than 20 individuals who have currently qualified for the NCAA East Prelims.
-The top 48 individuals in each region qualify for the prelims, while just the top 24 relay teams advance.
-The team looks to add several more qualifiers after this weekend’s B1G Championships.

What's Up Next
-The Boilermakers travel to the Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
-They will compete from Friday through Sunday in Columbus, Ohio.
-The Boilermakers currently have 20 marks between the men and women that rank in the top 10 in the B1G this season.
-Nunn leads the women with the best long jump mark in the conference while Davis tops the men’s group with the second-best high jump clearance.

Burton A Hall of Famer
-Lawrence Burton, a two-sport star who also played for the football team, will be inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame on April 27.
-Burton was inducted into the Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996.
-The Melfa, Va., native, nicknamed "The Fastest Man on Earth," tied the world record in the 60m dash and set the world record in the 200-yard dash.
-Burton finished fourth in the 200-meter dash in the 1972 Olympic Games.
-He was a four-time Big Ten Champion and two-time track All-American.
-Burton also earned All-America honors in football and was an All-Big Ten honoree.
-He earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and was the football team's MVP in 1974.
-Burton was the 1975 Big Ten Medal of Honor winner and was a first-round draft pick to the New Orleans Saints in 1975. He played professional football for six years.

Boilers Add Wallace To Signing Class
-The team has now signed 11 incoming freshman, nine women and two men with the addition of local track star Lucas Wallace.
-Savannah Carson, Carmiesha Cox, Devynne Charlton, Shantyra Delaney, Taylor Dunlap, Makayla Earnheart, Kiara McIntosh, Chelsie Meeks, and Hope Schmelze join the women's team.
-Obokhare Ikpefan and Wallace signed on with the men's team. 
-The track signing period began in February and continues to the start of August.
-A new release including Wallace's statistics, achievements, and more will be available in the coming weeks as the team looks to wrap up its class.

Calling All Campers
-The Purdue track and field and cross country teams will hold a summer camp for all boys and girls in sixth through 12th grade.
-The camp will run from June 23-27 and all skill levels are welcome.
