Tuesday Track Tidbits

This is the 12th edition of Purdue Track Tidbits. The weekly update features upcoming news and events, national standings, top performers, school records, and other happenings within the program. These ‘tidbits’ are released each Tuesday of the season.

Boilers Among Nation’s Best
-Purdue has six individuals with top-25 marks in the country this season including two in the top 10.
-Nikki Nunn has the fourth-best long jump. She jumped 6.32m (20-09) at the SEC-B1G Challenge. That jump is third-best in Purdue history
-Geoff Davis has the seventh-best high jump mark. He cleared 2.22m (7-03.25) at the Tiger Track Classic over the weekend. That ties his PR and is tied for second in program history.
-Jakob Engel is 11th in the nation in the shot put. He threw a personal best and the fourth-best throw in Purdue history at the Shamrock Invite with a distance of 18.69m (61-04).
-Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has the 12th-best hammer throw mark in the country. He threw 64.94m (213-01) over the weekend which is fourth in Purdue history.
-Coy Blair threw the 19th-best shot put distance in the country with a distance of 18.21m (59-09).
-Cierra Brown has the 25th-best triple jump in the country. She leapt 12.62m (41-05) over the weekend.

Adding To The Top Fives
-On top of Nunn, Davis, Engel, and Enekwechi moving up the top-five lists in program history, a few other Boilermakers added their names.
-Tyler Wynn ran the fifth-fasted 1,500-meter run in program history over the weekend. He finished in 3:47.79.
-Vanessa McLeod ran the fourth-fastest outdoor 800-meter run in Purdue lore. She finished in 2:07.50.
-Blair Doney ran the sixth-fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase in program history over the weekend after finishing in 10:40.58.

Burton A Hall of Famer
-Lawrence Burton, a two-sport star who also played for the football team, will be inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame on April 27.
-Burton was inducted into the Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996.
-The Melfa, Va., native, nicknamed “The Fastest Man on Earth,” tied the world record in the 60m dash and set the world record in the 200-yard dash.
-Burton finished fourth in the 200-meter dash in the 1972 Olympic Games.
-He was a four-time Big Ten Champion and two-time track All-American.
-Burton also earned All-America honors in football and was an All-Big Ten honoree.
-He earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and was the football team’s MVP in 1974.
-Burton was the 1975 Big Ten Medal of Honor winner and was a first-round draft pick to the New Orleans Saints in 1975. He played professional football for six years.



Calling All Campers
-The Purdue track and field and cross country teams will hold a summer camp for all boys and girls in sixth through 12th grade.
-The camp will run from June 23-27 and all skill levels are welcome.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered
-The team has now signed 10 incoming freshman, nine women and one man.
-Savannah Carson, Carmiesha Cox, Devynne Charlton, Shantyra Delaney, Taylor Dunlap, Makayla Earnheart, Kiara McIntosh, Chelsie Meeks, and Hope Schmelze join the women’s team.
-Obokhare Ikpefan signed on with the men’s team. 
-The track signing period began last Wednesday and continues to the start of August.
-A full release including statistics, achievements, and more will be available for the entire class once it is completed.

What’s Up Next
-The Boilermakers travel to the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., this weekend.
-The meet will be held from April 11-13 and is hosted by the University of Tennessee.
-A full preview of the meet will be posted on Wednesday.

Alumni News
-All track and field and cross alumni are invited to the 2013 reunion. 
-The reunion will be over the weekend of April 19th and 20th, the same weekend as the team hosts the Dave Rankin Outdoor Track and Field Invite.
