WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue track and field teams will kick off their outdoor season on Friday as the teams travel to Starkville, Miss., to take part in the SEC/Big Ten Challenge.
Breann Fife will be the first Boilermaker to compete in the event. She is scheduled to be in the first flight of the women's hammer throw. That event wills start at 9 a.m. CT. Emily Leckenby is also in the event. She will be in flight two. Emily Becker will compete at noon in the women's javelin along two other Boilermakers who have been anxiously awaiting the start of outdoor season. Elaine Gilbert and Kaitlyn Brace will also compete with this event being the first of Brace's career.
Nikki Nunn will be in the women's long jump. Boilermaker standout Leah Eber has the weekend off after competing just two weeks ago at the NCAA Championships meet. Liberty Slinden and Terri Anderson will represent the Old Gold and Black in the shot put. Anderson finished fifth in the conference in the indoor season last month. Slinden and Anderson will also throw the discus. Stephanie Bonk will get her first shot of the year at the 3000m steeplechase while Dana Payonk, Blair Doney, and Kelly McCurdy will run in the 1500m. Ciana Tabb is scheduled to run in the women's 100m hurdles at 2:55 p.m. CT.
Kair Shoolbraid, Megan Plenus, McCurdy, Doney, Payonk, and Bre'Anna Smith will run the women's 800m run. The women's 400m hurdles are scheduled to start at 4:40 p.m. CT. Morgan Monroe will compete for the Boilermakers in that event. Elisa Glass, Ebony Woodard, Taylor Morrison, and Tabb are slated to run in the women's 200m dash at 5:05 p.m.
On the men's side, Jakob Engel and Cal Luby will compete in the hammer throw. This will be the first action of the year for Luby, while Engel will also compete in the shot put. Shawn Nickleson is also scheduled to make his 2012 debut. The sophomore will compete in the long jump at noon CT. Byron Ferrell makes his season debut in the men's pole vault. He will compete alongside teammate Zack Saunders.
Scott Lasiter will represent the Old Gold and Black in the men's 3000m steeplechase while Derrick Spight is scheduled in the men's high jump. Standout Geoff Davis has the weekend off after recently competing in the indoor NCAA Championships. The Boilermakers will have a strong showing in the men's 400m dash. Andrew Kendrick, Josh Lee, Rob McNair, Gabe Pirtle, and Chris Arvia will all compete. Mitch Keyser, Tyler Wynn, and Dan Porter all are slated to compete in the men's 800m run at 4:20 p.m.
Mario Cosey will run in both the men's 100m and 200m dashes for Purdue. Lee, Kendrick, Arvia, and McNair will also run in the 200m. Three more Boilermakers will run in the 3000m run. Cale Allen, Dominic DeSantis, and Brett Klosterhoff will represent Purdue.
The meet is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. CT at the Maddox Track on the campus of Mississippi State University. Live results can be found at PurdueSports.com.
