This is the ninth edition of Purdue Track Tidbits. The weekly update features upcoming news and events, national standings, top performers, school records, and other happenings within the program. These ‘tidbits’ are released each Tuesday of the season.
Engel Picks Up Where He Left Off
-Jakob Engel, just a week after finishing eighth in the nation in the indoor shot put, threw an outdoor PR in the event and tied the fourth-best mark in Purdue history as he threw 18.69m (61-04). That mark is currently fifth in the nation.
-Engel also has the No. 2 mark in school history for the indoor event with his all-time best mark of 19.16m (62-10.50).
Early National Leaders
-Geoff Davis is currently tied for second in the country in the high jump. The senior cleared 2.20m (7-02.50) which ties his best outdoor mark from last season. Davis’ best mark is 2.22m (7-03.25) which he cleared as a freshman.
-Engel is fifth in the nation in the shot put with his aforementioned mark. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi is ninth in the event with a mark of 17.68m (58-00.25) while Jordan Roos is 11th with a distance of 17.37m (57-00). Coy Blair is 17th with a throw of 17.00m (55-09.25).
-Kelly McCurdy ran the nation’s fifth-fastest 5k in the early goings of the season. She crossed the line in 16:39.89. Blair Doney is 20th in the nation in the event while Samantha Walkow is currently 21st.
-Brandon Winters ran the 11th-fastest 110m hurdles in the country at this point in the season. He finished with a time of 14.17 seconds.
-Aarin Jones is currently 16th in the 400m dash. The freshman ran a time of 54.92 seconds.
-Dani Bunch is 17th in the shot. She threw 15.14m (49-08.25).
-Enekwechi is 17th in the hammer throw. His best toss was 58.89m (193-02).
-Emily Becker has the 17th-best heptathlon total this year. She won the event with 4,363 points.
-Caleb Kerr is No. 22 in the country in the 5,000-meter run after the team’s first meet. He ran a time of 14:49.41.
-Andre’ Peart ran the 22nd-fastest 400m hurdle time in the country to date. He finished with a time of 53.27 seconds.
-Nikki Nunn is currently 22nd in the long jump. She leapt 5.86m (19-02.75).
Calling All Campers
-The Purdue track and field and cross country teams will hold a summer camp for all boys and girls in sixth through 12th grade.
-The camp will run from June 23-27 and all skill levels are welcome.
-A full release about the camp, including a brochure, will be posted on Wednesday.
Signed, Sealed, Delivered
-The team has now signed 10 incoming freshman, nine women and one man.
-Savannah Carson, Carmiesha Cox, Devynne Charlton, Shantyra Delaney, Taylor Dunlap, Makayla Earnheart, Kiara McIntosh, Chelsie Meeks, and Hope Schmelze join the women’s team.
-Obokhare Ikpefan signed on with the men’s team.
-The track signing period began last Wednesday and continues to the start of August.
-A full release including statistics, achievements, and more will be available for the entire class once it is completed.
What’s Up Next
-The Boilermakers hit the road for warmer temperatures as they travel to Starkville, Miss., for the SEC-Big Ten Challenge.
-The meet will run Friday and Saturday with Mississippi State hosting.
-All track and field and cross alumni are invited to the 2013 reunion.
-The reunion will be over the weekend of April 19th and 20th, the same weekend as the team hosts the Dave Rankin Outdoor Track and Field Invite.
