WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
The Purdue University men's and women's track and field teams are set to host the Boilermaker Invitational tomorrow in their last competition before next weekend's Big Ten Indoor Championships. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in Lambert Fieldhouse.
"This is our last chance to get ready for Big Tens," said head coach Jack Warner. "We're holding some people out of this weekend in preparation, while others are getting one last shot to mark a great time before next week. It's really just a tune-up for everyone."
Among those seeking that final tune-up will be senior John Porter, sophomore Mallory Peck and junior Sheena James. Porter has been on the verge of qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the men's pole vault, with his top height (5.10m/16-08.75) just 0.10 meters shy of the mark. Peck has already reached the provisional qualifying standard in the women's pole vault, but hopes to take a shot at the Lambert Fieldhouse record of 4.05 meters (13-03.50). Her top vault of the season is just slightly better as she cleared 4.06 meters (13-03.75) at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational on February 2. James will toss the shot put and weight as she heads into her second meet after an ankle injury. Before that she fractured the women's indoor record in the shot put, marking 15.55 meters (51-00.25) at the Indiana Classic on January 20.
The meet will feature teams from all over the region including Valparaiso, Goshen and Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne. Other teams in attendance will be Fisk University from Nashville, Tenn. and Grand Valley State from Allendale, Michigan.
