The Purdue track and field teams head to Geneva, Ohio, to compete in the SPIRE Division 1 Indoor Track & Field Invitational. The Boilermakers will send 60 student-athletes, 30 men and 30 women, to compete in the two-day invitational.
Purdue will join at least 16 other teams to make up the 2013 field. Joining the Boilermakers from the Big Ten will be Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Minnesota and Michigan State. The Big Ten boasts some of the nation’s best including Morolake Akinosun of Illinois who has the 13th best 60m dash time in the country among women. The Illini’s Ashley Spencer is also scheduled to compete. She has the 30th fastest 60m time in the country and the ninth fastest 200m dash time nationally. Dynasty McGee of Penn State has the nation’s 23rd fastest 400m time and is scheduled to compete in the event. The women have a number of talented 800m runners, milers, and throwers as well.
On the men’s side, the Big Ten throws group is the best in the country. Cody Riffle of Michigan is sixth in the shot put nationally while Darrell Hill of Penn State is 15th. Antonio James of Michigan State comes in at 28th in the country in the shot put. The weight throw boasts an even stronger field. Micah Hegerle of Minnesota has thrown over 70 feet in his career. Ethan Dennis of Michigan is third in the nation while Jon Lehman of Minnesota is fourth. Michigan State’s James is ninth and Will Barr of Penn State is 10th.
The Boilermakers have plenty of competitors that are among the conference and national best as well.
Dani Bunch will compete in the weight throw and shot put for the women. She has the 12th best shot put distance in the nation and eighth best weight throw distance. She holds the school record in the shot put and is second in the weight. The men have the more shot putters in the top 25 than any other team in the country. Coy Blair leads the way and is 17th while Jakob Engel is 19th. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi is 22nd in the shot put and 11th nationally in the weight throw. Enekwechi cracked the top five in program history in the weight throw last week.
is scheduled to be back in action after a week off. The high jumper is currently 10th
in the nation and has cleared 2.22m (7-03.25) this season. Brandon Winters
will run in the 60m hurdles a week after finishing second in the event at the Meyo Invite. He has the 21st
-fastest time in the country this season with a mark of 7.88 seconds.
Caleb Kerr and Matthew McClintock, who are both in the top 50 in the 5k, are scheduled to compete in the 3k this weekend. The Boilermaker 4x400m relay team with Mario Cosey, Nicholas Parks, Andre’ Peart, and Andrew Kendrick are also expected to compete this weekend. The group currently has the nation’s 44th-best time.
Kari Shoolbraid is scheduled to make her first appearance of the season. She is one of the top Purdue runners in the 600m run.
The two-day invitational will be held at the same venue as this year’s Big Ten Indoor Championships.
