Tuesday Track Tidbits: Part Three

This is the third edition of Purdue Track Tidbits. The weekly update features a weekly update that will cover upcoming news and events, national standings, top performers, school records, and other happenings within the program. These ‘tidbits’ are released each Tuesday of the season.

Representing the U.S.A.
-Matthew McClintock finished third at the US Junior National Cross Country Championships with an 8k time of 24:51.9.
-The top six finishers earned a spot on the US National Team that will compete at the World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, on March 24th this year.

Signing Day Special
-The team will have a special release, as early as Wednesday, as the team signs its incoming recruits and they are officially cleared by the compliance department.
-The track signing period begins on Wednesday and continues to the start of August.

Shot Putters In The Rankings
-Purdue has three men ranked in the top 25 in the shot put. No other school has three in the top 25. Georgia has the second most with two.
-Freshman Coy Blair leads the group as he is tied for 17th with a distance of 18.50m (60-08.50).
-Senior Jakob Engel ranks 19th in the shot put. He threw 18.41m (60-05.00) on Jan. 19.
-Redshirt freshman Chukwuebuka Enekwechi ranks 22nd in the country. Enekwechi threw 18.21m (59-09.00)
-Dani Bunch’s school-record distance of 16.70m (54-09.50) ranks 12th in the nation among women’s throwers.

Weight, Don’t Forget Us!
-Enekwechi climbed into fifth place all time in Purdue history in the weight throw after his performance at the Meyo Invitational over the weekend. Enekwechi threw 20.37m (66-10.00) which is also good for 11th in the nation.
-Enekwechi is 5 feet, 5.75 inches shy of the school record which is held by his coach, Keith McBride.
-Bunch ranks eighth in the country for women with a season-best of 21.02m (68-11.75).


 

 

Big Ten Throwers Are The Deepest Group In The Nation
-Including Purdue’s three top 25 men’s shot putters, the Big Ten has six of the top 25 individuals in the nation, more than any other conference.
-Including Bunch’s Big Ten leading shot put distance, the conference boasts four of the top 25 women in the event.
-The Big Ten has eight men in the top 25 in the weight throw and five of the top 11 nationally, including Enekwechi. That is more than any other conference.
-Five women from the Big Ten are in the top 25 nationally in the women’s weight throw including Bunch’s fifth ranked throw. That is tied for the most of any conference with the Missouri Valley Conference.

Chasing School Records
-Aside from Bunch setting the shot put school record in the shot put and sitting second in the weight throw with her efforts earlier this season, another Boilermaker is nearing a Purdue record. Goeff Davis has the nation’s 10th best mark in the high jump this season, 2.22m (7-03.25). His indoor best is 2.23m (7-03.75), which he jumped in 2011, and is second all-time in program history. Davis is .03m (0-01.25) shy of Shaun Guice’s program record which he set in 2001.

Boilers In The Ranks
-Aside from the throwers and Davis, a number of other Boilers are in the top 50.
-Brandon Winters is 21st in the country in the 60m hurdles with a best of 7.88 seconds.
-Caleb Kerr is 40th in the nation in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:28.55.
-Matthew McClintock is 45th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:29.58.
-The men’s 4x400m relay team of Mario Cosey, Nicholas Parks, Andre’ Peart, and Andrew Kendrick is ranked 44th with a time of 3:12.91.

Honoring Fred Wilt
-The Boilermaker Invitational, which Purdue will host on Feb. 16 in Lambert Fieldhouse, will be renamed the Fred Wilt Boilermaker Invitational to honor the former Purdue head coach.
-Fred Wilt was the Purdue track and field and cross country head coach from 1978-89, one of the programs most successful eras. Wilt led the cross country team to a second place finish at the Big Ten Championships in 1983 as well as a second place outdoor track and field finish in 1986. Wilt then coached the women’s team to the programs first Big Ten Title for the outdoor season in 1987. The late Purdue leader coached 17 All-Americans and one National Champion. Wilt is a member of the Purdue Athletics Hall of Fame, USATF Hall of Fame, as well as the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame where he competed collegiately.

Thrower Tossing Out The Record Books
-Bunch broke her own school record in the shot put on Jan. 26th at the IU Relays. Bunch threw 16.70m (54-09.50) to break her previous record by two inches. Bunch also sits in second in Purdue history in the weight throw, just 1 foot, 11.75 inches shy of tying the program best of 21.62m (70-11.25).

Upcoming Events
-Purdue will travel to Geneva, Ohio, to compete in the SPIRE NCAA D1 Indoor Invite.
-This weekend’s two-day invitational is at the same venue as the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Feb. 22-23.
