This is the first edition of the 2014 Purdue Track Tidbits. It is a weekly update that features upcoming news and events, national standings, top performers, school records and other happenings within the program. These ‘tidbits’ are released each Tuesday of the season.
Throwers Toss Out The Record Books
-Dani Bunch and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi have broken school records a combined five times this year after just two meets.
-Bunch broke the school shot put and weight throw record at the Mastodon Opener in December, before re-breaking the shot put mark at the Gene Edmonds Invite last week. Her records are 21.72m (71-03.25) in the weight and 16.92m (55-06.25) in the indoor shot.
-Enekwechi has broken the men’s weight throw record at both meets this year. He moved into first place all-time in Purdue lore at the Mastodon Opener with a mark of 22.19m (72-09.75), before throwing 22.25m (73-00.00) at the Gene Edmonds Invite to also break the Lambert Fieldhouse facility record.
-Enekwechi also threw a shot put PR over the weekend and ranks fourth in Purdue history.
National Athlete Of The Week
-Enekwechi took home the first USTFCCCA Division I Men’s National Athlete of the Week honor. The award was announced Monday afternoon and is posted on the USTFCCCA website, as well as PurdueSports.com.
Among World’s Best
-Bunch and Enekwechi’s mark are not only impressive at the collegiate level, they are among the best in the world.
-Enekwechi’s weight throw mark is the third best in the world this year. His shot put best is the 20th this year.
-Bunch’s weight throw mark is the fourth best in the world this year. Her shot put distance is the eighth best across the globe.
Boilers Dominate B1G Athletes Of The Week
In The Rankings
-After three weeks of Big Ten Athletes of the week, multiple Boilermakers have been selected in two of them.
-The Boilermakers have collected six of 13 total Big Ten Athletes of the Week, 13 because of co-male track athletes of the week on Monday.
-Enekwechi and Bunch have each won a pair of Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week honors, including this week.
-Megan Plenus and Brandon Winters were named Big Ten Track Athletes of the Week after the Mastodon Opener in December.
-The Purdue women are in the preseason top-25 rankings for the first time since weekly rankings by the USTFCCCA began in 2008.
-The Boilermakers are one of two Big Ten teams in the top 25 and debut at No. 17. Michigan is ranked 13th
-The last time the Boilermakers were in the top 25 was 2008.
-The men’s team just missed the preseason computer poll and is No. 32, a year after finishing 18th
at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Top 25 Marks
-Purdue has 22 marks in the nation’s top-25 of their respective events.
-Enekwechi and Bunch are each No. 1 in the weight throw.
-Bunch also has the No. 2 shot put mark, while Enekwechi’s shot put distance is the eighth-best in the country.
-Cierra Brown has the nation’s No. 2 mark in the triple jump, a distance of 12.71m (41-08.50).
-Kari Shoolbraid has the nation’s No. 3 mark in the 800m run, 2:09.58, while Megan Plenus’ time of 2:12.40 is 12th. Hope Schmelzle 800m time of 2:14.64 is the 24th-best time in the country this year.
-Nikki Nunn is seventh in the country in the long jump. She leapt 6.13m (20-01.50) at the Gene Edmonds Invite.
-Brandon Winters is seventh in the nation in the 60m hurdles. He has a best of 7.88 seconds.
-Andrew Kendrick has the nation’s eighth-best 400m time with a mark of 47.98 seconds.
-The Purdue women’s relay team of Shoolbraid, Aarin Jones, BreAnna Smith and Ciana Tabb is ranked eighth in the country with a time of 3:43.58.
-Raheem Mostert is 15th in the country in the 200m, 21.48 seconds, and 20th in the 60m, 6.78 seconds.
-Mario Cosey has the 24th-best 200m time with a mark of 21.64 seconds.
-Jones’ 400m time is the 17th best across the country this year. Her time is 55.84 seconds.
-Dan Porter’s 800m time is the 16th best in the country with a mark of 1:53.19.
-Tabb’s 60m hurdles time is 21st in the country. She has a mark of 8.51 seconds.
-The men’s top relay team of Obokhare Ikpefan, Kendrick, Cosey and Andre’ Peart ran a 3:14.63 in the 4x400m, the nation’s 16th best.
-Tyler Askew has the nation’s 11th best long jump with a distance of 7.33m (24-00.75).
-Savannah Carson’s long jump mark of 5.91m (19-04.75) is the nation’s 22nd best.
-Coy Blair has the nation’s 12th-best shot put throw with a mark of 18.39m (60-04.00).
-Purdue will host the annual Purdue & Indiana Dual on Saturday inside Lambert Fieldhouse.
-The teams began the annual dual in 2010 and the Hoosiers have won all four meets on the men’s and women’s sides.
-The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET with the last relay concluding at approximately 5 p.m.
