WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue Track & Field team is set to kick off its indoor season at home on Saturday as the Boilermakers welcome three schools to Lambert Fieldhouse for the annual Purdue Invitational. Purdue will face Cornerstone, Huntington, and St. Ambrose starting at 11 a.m. ET in the unscored season opener.
"We are really anxious to kick off the season," head coach Jack Warner said. "It'll be a good meet to see where we are at this point. It will also be a great opportunity to get a good look at our key freshmen that will be competing for us for the first time."
Several Boilermaker standouts will be held out of the first competition while others will compete as unattached individuals. Others, still, will jump right into the action. Redshirt junior Jakob Engel, an honorable mention outdoor All-American in the spring, will be one of the first Boilermakers in action as he will compete in the weight throw and shot put. Connor McCulley will also compete in the men's weight throw.
For the women, last year's Big Ten Freshman of the year, Big Ten indoor weight throw champion, and All-American Dani Bunch will compete in the weight throw as well as the shot put. Terri Anderson, an outdoor honorable mention All-American in the discus, will also compete in weight throw and shot put.
Derrick Spight is the lone Boilermaker male competing in the men's high jump. All-American Geoff Davis has the weekend off and will compete next weekend at the Indiana/Purdue Dual. Kendria Kelly-Taylor is also the only female to compete in the women's triple jump.
In the track events, Blair Doney and Linsey Daluga will compete for the women in the one mile run while Brett Klosterhoff will compete for the men. Hurdling for the Boilermakers will be Katie Vierk, Ciana Tabb, and Emily Becker for the women while Mike Willey and Brandon Winters will go for the men.
Sophomore Ebony Woodard will head the women's 400m dash group while Andrew Kendrick and Josh Lee will lead the men's group. In the women's 200m dash, Elise Glass and Tatyana Fykes will represent the Old Gold and Black women while Willey and Winters will be on the men's side.
Saturday's action will start at 11 a.m. with the men's weight throw, women's pole vault and women's long jump. Doors to Lambert Fieldhouse will open at 10 a.m. and tickets will be $5 for adults, $2 for students and free for Purdue students with a Boilermaker VIP Card. Heat sheets will be available for sale at the door, while live results of Saturday's competition will be available at PurdueSports.com throughout the day, courtesy of Delta Timing Group.
