EUGENE, Ore. - Dani Bunch wrapped up the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the Boilermakers on Saturday by scoring in the shot put. Bunch took eighth place in the event to pick up one point for the Purdue women.
Bunch had her best throw with her first attempt. The junior recorded a mark of 16.83m (55-02.75) which was the best by anyone from the Big Ten conference at the meet. The Big Ten outdoor shot put champion was just one inch behind seventh place.
Tia Brooks of Oklahoma won the national championship in the event. She shattered the NCAA meet record by throwing 18.91m (62-00.50). That mark was just three and a quarter inches shy of the all-time NCAA record. Brittany Smith of Illinois State took the silver medal with a throw of 17.85m (58-06.75) while Felisha Johnson of Indiana State took third with a best of 17.30m (56-09.25).
The Purdue women finished tied for 61st in the nation with one point. The men finished with six points, all from Geoff Davis' bronze medal finish in the high jump on Friday, tied for 37th. The men's total was eighth-best in the Big Ten while the women were seventh among conference finishers.
Texas A&M and Florida tied for the men's team national title with 53 points each. Kansas ran away with the women's title as the Jayhawks scored 60 points.
