DES MOINES, Iowa - Dani Bunch wrapped up the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday with a top-15 finish in the shot put. Bunch finished 15th with a throw of 16.21m (53-02.25).
The Purdue sophomore entered the event with the 20th best mark in the nation. She improved on each throw in the championships, but failed to qualify for the final round. Bunch’s first throw went 15.33m (50-03.50). Her second throw was better by over a foot as it went 15.67m (51-05.00). Her final throw bumped her from 20th place to 15th where she finished.
Tia Brooks of Oklahoma led from the very beginning and held on to become the NCAA Champion. The Sooner junior had all four of her counted throws, the other two were foul, over 18m (59-00.75). Her best was 18.44m (60-06.00) which won by over two feet. Brittany Smith of Illinois State finished second. The junior finished with a mark of 17.80m (58-04.75). Jeneva McCall of Southern Illinois rounded out the top three. She earned the bronze medal with a distance of 17.67m (57-11.75).
Annie Alexander of Tennessee finished fourth while Felisha Johnson of Indiana State took fifth. Kearsten Peoples from Missouri was sixth. Chinwe Okoro of Louisville and Michelle Anumba of Duke took seventh and eighth, respectively, to round out the scoring.
The Boilermakers finished up the season with Bunch’s shot put efforts. The sophomore had a tremendous year as she was Big Ten Outdoor Champion in the event last month.
