Friday Results / Saturday Heat Sheets

LEXINGTON, Ky. –
Four more Boilermakers qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds. Three other individuals advanced through the first round to Saturday preliminaries and will have a chance to qualify in the quarterfinals.

Micaela Hazlewood got things started for the Boilermakers. She opened in the discus with a throw of 50.61 meters (166-0). That put her in 17th place, meaning she would need to improve to have a chance at advancing. On her second attempt, Hazlewood, a junior, threw the discus 54.21m (177-10), which moved her up to ninth. Though she fouled her third attempt, her mark would hold on to ninth place and earn her a trip to the NCAA Championships. Hazlewood has qualified for the national championships in the discus all three years as a Boilermaker. Her first season, she finished honorable mention before claiming second team All-America honors a year ago.

Brionna Thomas was next to punch her ticket to the NCAA Championships. The junior advanced in the 400m dash after breaking her own school record with a time of 52.22 seconds to take third in her heat. That broke her previous record by 0.26 of a second and earned an automatic bid to the championships. Thomas has twice qualified for the NCAA Championships indoors, but had not previously qualified outdoors. Her best outdoors was 14th in the event at last year’s prelims.

Janae’ Moffitt was the next to qualify after advancing in the high jump. She had just one miss through 1.79m (5-10.50) which made her one of 14 over the bar. She was tied for fourth. Despite not clearing the next bar, she advanced to the NCAA Championships after tying for ninth. Moffitt, a sophomore, has qualified for both outdoor NCAA Championships in her career, as well as the indoor meet earlier this year.

Symone Black was the final Boilermaker to qualify to the NCAA Championships and did so in the 400m hurdles. Black had the top time in the first round and came out of lane 5 in the first heat in the quarterfinal. She was among the top two coming around the home stretch when the leader, Tyler Brockington of South Carolina, fell on the eighth hurdle. Black had to dodge her, as they were next to each other, and then pulled away from the rest of the field. She clipped the 10th hurdle, which nearly knocked her over, but the junior was able to maintain her composure after about four steps to come across the line with the heat win. Her time was 56.91 seconds. Black advances to the NCAA Championships in the event for the second year in a row.

Devynne Charlton advanced through the first round of the 100m hurdles by winning her heat. The redshirt junior posted a time of 13.02 seconds, which was the fourth overall time in the first round. Justin Veteto moved on in the men’s 110m hurdles. He ran a time of 14.01 seconds to finish fifth in his heat and earned the final at-large spot in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Savannah Roberson grabbed an automatic bid into the quarterfinals in the 200m dash after taking third in her heat. She ran a time of 23.46 seconds.

Chloe Abbott broke the freshman record in the 400m dash Friday. She ran a time of 52.88 seconds to finish fifth in her heat and 16th overall, just four spots shy of qualifying. Abbott is just the second Boilermaker in program history to break 53-seconds in the outdoor 400m dash (Thomas is the other). She was second among freshmen in the region.
