SAN DIEGO – Sophomore Ashmon Lucas broke the school record in the discus throw Saturday at the Triton Invitational. His winning throw of 62.91 meters (206-4) is the best by any thrower in the NCAA this season and ranks among the 20 best throws by anyone in the world this year.
Lucas fouled his first two attempts before uncorking his monster throw. His toss is the first by a Boilermaker to ever reach 60 meters (196-10). His throw breaks the previous school record, set by Caleb Fricke in 2014, by 11 feet, seven inches. His throw also surpassed the NCAA leader, Nicholas Percy of Nebraska, by one foot, three inches. Lucas is now within three feet, six inches of the all-time Big Ten record.
Lucas won Saturday’s open competition by 22 feet, six inches.
Senior Micaela Hazlewood had a personal record in the shot put. She threw 15.76 meters (51-8.50) on her second attempt. That moves her into fourth in school history and 32nd in the country and sixth in the Big Ten.
Full results from the meet will be posted as they become available.
