Captured fourth place in the shot put at the Big Ten Indoor Championships (3/1) with a top indoor mark of 17.85 meters (58-06.75); provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the shot put with his season best; advanced to his second straight NCAA Mideast Regional Championship with his top outdoor throw of 17.61 meters (57-09.50); placed in both the shot put and discus at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships (5/16-17), taking fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put and tossing season bests in both events.
Qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the shot put, securing an automatic bid with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships; earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors; named the 2008 Big Ten Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year and Big Ten Outdoor Field Athlete of the Championships after winning the shot put and discus at the conference championships with career-best marks; also awarded Big Ten Outdoor Freshman of the Year honors, making him the third straight Boilermaker conference freshman of the year and second straight Purdue athlete to earn the outdoor honor; owned the NCAA's top freshman marks in the shot put and discus; took fifth place in the shot put at the 2008 Big Ten Indoor Championships.

Four-year varsity letterwinner at Mobridge High School; won the 2006 South Dakota State High School Championship in the discus, setting the state championship meet record; also placed second in the state as a junior and eighth as a sophomore; four-time South Dakota State High School Championship runner-up in the shot put.
William Marshall Hardcastle was born Oct. 6, 1987, in Mobridge, S.D.; is the son of Bill and Deb Hardcastle; has three sisters: Brandie, Kristie and Lacey; majoring in organization, leadership and supervision.
