Steve Solberg was named Purdue's spirit squad coordinator and head cheer/mascot coach in May 2010.
Solberg came to the Boilermakers from Sun Prairie (Wis.) High School, where he served as head cheerleading coach from 2006 to 2010.
Solberg has more than eight years of head coaching experience and more than 14 years of sideline and competition cheerleading experience. He started his coaching career in 2005 as an assistant coach at Sun Prairie High while finishing up his degree. He also served as a volunteer coach at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, his alma mater. Solberg took over as head coach at Sun Prairie the following season while continuing to serve as a volunteer coach at Wisconsin.
"To say I'm excited about being at Purdue would be a huge understatement," Solberg said. "To work for a Big Ten Conference athletics department as a spirit squad coordinator and coach is a dream of mine. I have my dream job."
During his years as the head coach at Sun Prairie, Solberg took his teams to UCA high school nationals four times and placed in the top three each year. In 2008, Solberg and his staff led Sun Prairie to a UCA national championship in the large varsity coed division, becoming the first team from the state of Wisconsin and the Midwest region to capture a UCA National High School Cheerleading championship. In 2009 and 2010, Sun Prairie came in second.
As an undergrad, Solberg cheered at Wisconsin from 2001 to 2005, competed twice at UCA College Nationals and was on the only two teams from the University of Wisconsin to ever advance to the finals. His Badgers placed eighth in 2003, the only time they have ever placed in the top 10. In addition to cheering in college, Solberg was a summer staff member for Cheerleaders of America, traveling around the country teaching cheerleading camps to cheerleaders of all ages.
Solberg received his bachelor of arts degree in journalism and mass communications from Wisconsin in 2006. In addition to his high school and collegiate coaching, Solberg was a clinician, tumbling instructor and coach for the Prairie All-Stars from 2005 to 2008 and remained in the same role when the gym changed to Cheer Wisconsin in 2009.
Coach Solberg is AACCA certified.
After graduating from Wisconsin, in addition to his coaching duties, Coach Solberg was a full-time insurance agent at Harms Insurance Group (Sun Prairie, Wis.) from 2006-2009 and a senior sales associate at West Business Services (Middleton, Wis.) from 2009-2010.
Steven Michael Solberg was born in Seoul, South Korea. He grew up in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, where he is a graduate of Lincoln High School. He is the oldest child to Randy and Son Solberg and has a younger sister Stephanie.
