Fifty-Four Named Distinguished Scholars
July 6, 2016

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday that 914 students competing in intercollegiate athletics have earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award. The list includes students from all 14 institutions and 38 different sports who have recorded a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year.

The 2015-16 class of Distinguished Scholar Award recipients includes at least 147 students who maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA during the previous academic term. This group of honorees is pursuing diverse fields of study with a list of majors that include mathematics, accountancy, kinesiology, biological sciences, law and public policy, mechanical engineering, nursing, biotechnology, elementary education, business, journalism, marketing, psychology and many others.

Purdue had 54 student-athletes earn the award, including 14 that had a 4.0 -- Jon McKeeman, Hayden Hamby, Bree Horrocks, Matt McClintock, Sharise Lund, Jimmy Herman, Kim Love, Mary Gooding, Evan Barta, Alex Toetz, Madison Monteiro, Nika Petric, Gergely Madarasz, and Linnea Rohrsen.

Cross country and track and field are listed separately, giving eight Boilermakers honors for multiple sports -- Jeremy Craven, Jacob Hanawalt and Matthew McClintock on the men's side and Gabrielle Broschard, Kendall Hacker, Katie Hoevet, Brooke Kline and Sharise Lund on the women's.

Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution. However, the Distinguished Scholar Award encompasses only students with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career.
