Tom Mitchell has direct oversight of the entire athletics compliance function within the athletics department. He was hired as director of compliance in 2010 and was promoted to assistant athletics director in 2013.
Before coming to Purdue, Mitchell served as an assistant director for compliance at Ohio State University beginning in November of 2007. At OSU, he oversaw the compliance department's intern program and served as the primary compliance contact for men's basketball, field hockey, women's golf, men's lacrosse, men's and women's swimming and diving, synchronized swimming, men's and women's tennis and wrestling.
Prior to his stint at Ohio State, Mitchell served as the assistant director for compliance at the University of Southern California. During his time at USC, Mitchell was responsible for providing interpretations of NCAA and Pac-10 Conference legislation to the athletic department, educating coaches and student-athletes and monitoring compliance procedures.
Previously, Mitchell worked at the NCAA in Membership Services through an externship sponsored by the law school. After law school, Mitchell worked in Membership Services as an Assistant Coordinator and was responsible for providing interpretations and explanations of NCAA legislation to the general public via the telephone.
A native of Carmel, Ind., Mitchell received his bachelor's degree from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University-Bloomington in 2000. He then worked in the financial services industry as a sales manager, client services representative and broker/dealer document specialist. Mitchell received his juris doctorate from Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis in 2006.
Tom and his wife, Betsy, have two sons, Will and Jack.
