Christina Specos was named associate director of sports performance in April of 2011. She oversees the sports performance programs for the women's basketball, soccer, women's tennis and volleyball teams.
In her first year at Purdue, the volleyball team had its best season in over 25 years, finishing second in the Big Ten Conference and advancing to the NCAA Tournament round of 16. It was the Boilermakers' best Big Ten performance since 1987. The women's basketball program went 25-9, tied for second in the Big Ten and won the 2012 Big Ten Tournament. It was the third Big Ten Tournament title for head coach Sharon Versyp in a six-year period.
Previous to Purdue, she was the head strength and conditioning coach at The Lawrenceville School just outside of Princeton, N.J., while also working as the director of sports performance at Lightning Fast Training Systems. While with Lightning Fast, she worked with all athletes, from youth to collegiate and assisted with NFL Pre-Combine Training program. She has pursued advanced training in Pilates mat and equipment, as well as massage therapy. Her advanced training has led to work with private NFL clients in massage therapy.
Specos received a bachelor's degree in athletic training from West Chester University in 2002 and a master's in exercise science and health promotion from California University of Pennsylvania in 2007. Additionally, she attended the Pennsylvania School of Massage Therapy and completed two mentorship programs at Athlete's Performance in Tempe, Ariz., and Pensacola, Fla.
She interned with the Philadelphia Wings professional lacrosse team for two years and consulted with the San Francisco 49ers, where she created a Pilates for Athletes program.
Specos is a NATA certified athletic trainer, NSCA certified strength and conditioning specialist, and NASM performance enhancement specialist. She is a star three Johnny G Spinning Instructor. She is comprehensively trained in the Pilates method through Body Arts and Sciences International (BSI) and is also certified by the Powerhouse Institute (PHI). She is CPR and AED professional rescue certified.
