Fans are invited to join the Purdue women's basketball team as Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) is a special day for girls and women to celebrate their participation in sports and athletics. When Title IX was enacted in 1971, one in 27 girls in high school participated in athletics. Presently, one in three girls participate in high school athletics and there has been an explosion in the number of athletic opportunities open to women and girls of all ages and levels of ability.

In association with National Girls and Women in Sports Day, Purdue Athletics will honor one female in the community with the 2008 ALL INspiration Award. A potential recipient could be a coach, teacher, mentor, friend, relative or anyone that has contributed to the development of local youth in a positive way this year. To nominate a deserving individual, complete the official nomination form and include a 300-word letter of support and return to Purdue Athletics Promotions by mail or email before January 6. The mailing address is Mackey Arena, Room 69, 900 N. University St., West Lafayette, IN, 47907.

Nomination letters will be evaluated based on the four areas that are the spirit of National Girls and Women in Sports Day: volunteerism, leadership, compassion and good sportsmanship. The recipient of the award will be notified prior to the January 20 celebration and will be recognized during the women's basketball game vs. Northwestern at 2 p.m. ET in Mackey Arena.

"All In!" is the theme for the NGWSD and all ages and genders are invited to celebrate at Lambert Fieldhouse from noon to 1:45 p.m., prior to the women's basketball game. The event is free and open to the public and will include demonstrations from all varsity teams, the Purdue cheerleaders, inflatable games, giveaways and much more. Meet your favorite student-athletes and coaches, learn new skills, discover career information and get your picture taken with Purdue Pete. In addition to the celebration event, all fans are encouraged to help Purdue win the NCAA/Big Ten Pack the House Challenge and stay for the women's basketball game at 2 p.m. in Mackey Arena. Tickets have been reduced for this special event and are available for just $2 for students and $5 for adults.
