WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Eight Purdue squads are in action this weekend, as fall sports enter their stretch run and winter teams are getting revved up.

While the only home events are a Saturday wrestling dual against Duke (2 p.m. - more on that later) and a Sunday men's basketball game against Rider (7 p.m.), six other teams are in action on the road.

Men's swimming, which got under way at the Minnesota Grand Prix yesterday, continues competition today and tomorrow. Both cross country teams run at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet in Madison, Wis., this afternoon. Volleyball continues a stretch of four straight road matches at Northwestern tonight and at Illinois tomorrow. Football visits Penn State tomorrow. And women's basketball travels to Toledo, which is coached by former Purdue player Tricia Cullop (1990-93), on Sunday afternoon.

With six matches remaining, the 18th-ranked volleyball team is in seventh place in the Big Ten, one game behind Illinois, Michigan State and Wisconsin. The Boilermakers are 16-9 overall and 7-7 in the Big Ten. Click here for the conference standings.

Wrestling Celebrates 100 Years

In conjunction with its first home dual of the season Saturday afternoon against Duke, wrestling will celebrate 100 years as a sport at Purdue. More than 100 Boilermakers spanning the last seven decades - including 1950 128-pound national champion Joe Patacsil - are expected back and will be introduced at 1 p.m., prior to the competition that will begin at 2 p.m. in Holloway Gymnasium. This year's Boilermakers, ranked No. 23, opened the season last Saturday at the Michigan State Open and had five placewinners. Redshirt junior Braden Atwood led the way as the 197-pound runner-up.

Swimmers Honored by Big Ten

Senior Carly Mercer and freshman Filip Bujoczek earned Big Ten honors for their performances at last Friday's November Quad meet. Mercer was named the conference Female Swimmer of the Week for the second time in her career after sweeping the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events and contributing to a Purdue win in the 400 free relay. Bujoczek, meanwhile, was recognized as the conference Male Freshman Swimmer of the Week after winning the 200 free, finishing second in the 500 free and helping the Boilermakers' top 400 free relay team place second.
