WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Basketball season gets under way this weekend.

The men's team, under ninth-year coach Matt Painter, opens tonight at 7 against Northern Kentucky, while the women's squad, under eighth-year coach Sharon Versyp, starts Sunday at 2 p.m. against Ball State. Both games are at home in Mackey Arena.

Volleyball Set to be Road Warriors

The volleyball team, winners of five of its last six matches and now ranked No. 14 nationally, plays its next four contests on the road, beginning tonight at No. 2 Penn State. The Boilermakers (16-7, 7-5 Big Ten) then travel to Ohio State on Saturday, and next weekend they are at Northwestern and Illinois. Purdue currently sits in a four-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings.

Swimming and Diving Host November Quad

Coming off wins over intrastate rival Notre Dame last Friday, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams play host to the November Quad this afternoon at 4 at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The men will face Iowa, Northwestern and Ohio State, while the women will take on Northwestern and Ohio State. Against Notre Dame, the Purdue men won 14 of 16 events to upset the No. 22 Fighting Irish 208-92. The Purdue women captured 13 of 17 points in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, to pull out a 155.5-144.5 victory, their fifth straight over Notre Dame. The Purdue women won eight of 16 events.

McClintock Runner-up at Big Ten's

Sophomore Matthew McClintock finished second at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships last Sunday at Purdue. His time of 24:17.9 was one second behind the winner, Malachy Schrobilgen of Wisconsin. McClintock propelled the Boilermakers to a sixth-place finish with 163 points. It marked their best showing since finishing sixth in 1991 and their best point total since having 97 in 1986 to take fourth. A year ago, the men were ninth with 213 points.

On the women's side, Purdue had its best finish since 2007, finishing eighth with 221 points. Freshman Brynn Olinger led the Boilermakers, finishing 42nd with a time of 22:05.9. The women were 11th a year ago with 248 points.

Academic All-District

Four fall sport student-athletes have earned academic all-district honors: sophomores Robert Kugler (political science) and Shane Mikesky (movement and sports science) from football, junior Mollie Kuramoto (interdisciplinary film and video studies/English) from soccer, and redshirt freshman Faye Adelaja (movement and sports science) from volleyball.

'25/85 Club'

Purdue aspires to be a member of the "25/85 Club," those intercollegiate athletics organizations that achieve an average finish in the top 25 across all sports as illustrated in the Directors' Cup standings and have a Graduation Success Rate of 85 percent. Based on data compiled by department administrators, there were 10 such institutions that achieved the distinction for the 2012-13 school year: Duke, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Stanford, UCLA and Virginia. Purdue finished 42nd in the Directors' Cup standings and had a GSR of 80 percent, essentially landing the Boilermakers in the 85th percentile (84.69) among the 335 NCAA Division I schools. A year ago, Purdue was in the 82nd percentile (81.91) based on its Directors' Cup finish of 47th and GSR of 78.4 percent.


A group of men's and women's cross country runners will compete at the Hoosier Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., this afternoon. The women's 5k is scheduled to start at 3:15 p.m., followed by the men's 8k at 4 ... The wrestling team begins its season Saturday at the Michigan State Open ... Seniors Travis Carroll, Sterling Carter, Terone Johnson and Errick Peck have been named men's basketball team captains for the 2013-14 season ... Freshman Maddy Williams was selected as a second team all-conference performer by She ranked fifth in the Big Ten with 10 goals, tying the school freshman record, and her 24 points are the most by a freshman in school history ... The sixth Boiler Bridge Walk of the season is this afternoon. It will get under way when the football team arrives around 5:40 p.m., but fans should arrive early to get a good spot on the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge that spans the Wabash River between West Lafayette and Lafayette ... Former Purdue running back Kory Sheets has been named to the CFL West Division All-Star team. Sheets, who plays for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, finished second in the league with 1,598 rushing yards.
