WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The surging volleyball team, up to No. 16 in the national rankings, welcomes a pair of ranked opponents to Belin Court in Holloway Gymnasium tonight (No. 10 Minnesota at 7 o'clock) and Saturday (No. 15 Wisconsin at 7 p.m.). The Boilermakers (15-6, 6-4 Big Ten) are riding a four-match winning streak and finished the first half of conference play tied for fourth in the conference standings. Wisconsin also is 6-4 in league play, while Minnesota is 7-3. Tonight's match is Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night, with all Purdue faculty and staff receiving $5 admission with identification. Saturday's match is Scout Night, with all scouts and their families receiving $5 admission and fans with a Purdue-Ohio State football game ticket stub admitted for $3.
Junior middle blocker KiKi Jones was the second Boilermaker volleyball player honored in as many weeks as she was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in Purdue's wins against Indiana and No. 17 Michigan. The honor follows classmate Val Nichol's Big Ten Player of the Week selection on Oct. 21. Jones paced Purdue at the net with 1.57 blocks per set as Purdue held the two foes to just a .177 hitting percentage. She recorded a team-best four stuffs against Indiana and a match-high seven against Michigan.
Football 'Boiler Black Out Game' on Saturday Against Ohio State
The football team (1-6, 0-3 Big Ten) begins a busy month of November - filled with five games - by playing host to No. 4 Ohio State on Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium. Kickoff is at noon. It's the "Boiler Black Out Game," and all fans are encouraged to wear black. The Boilermakers are playing their sixth straight game and seventh overall against a team that is ranked or receiving votes in the national polls. The Buckeyes have the nation's longest winning streak at 20 games.
Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Sunday at Purdue
Purdue will play host the Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Sunday. The men's 8K race is scheduled to start at 10:45 a.m., followed by the women's 6K race at 11:45 a.m. It marks the first time since 2002 that the Boilermakers have hosted the championships. Cabassol Named Big Ten Diver of the Week
Redshirt sophomore Michelle Cabassol was named Big Ten Diver of the Week after winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter events Saturday at the Indiana Intercollegiates. Her winning scores of 295.75 and 303.65 were season highs and NCAA Zone qualifying marks. Cabassol is the first Purdue female diver to be honored by the Big Ten since redshirt junior Maddie Miskulin last November. The men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action today when they play host to Notre Dame at 5 p.m. for a co-ed dual meet at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
Kovacs Wins Big Ten Singles Championship
Mark Kovacs of the men's tennis team won the main singles draw at the Big Ten Singles Championships on Monday at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The ninth-seeded Kovacs defeated Dimitrjie Tasic of Indiana in the final 6-2, 6-1. Kovacs, a senior from Budapest, Hungary, won six matches, including an upset of No. 1 seed Vlad Stefan of Michigan, en route to the second individual tournament title of his Purdue career. The Boilermakers play their final fall tournament today through Sunday at the Louisville Invitational.
The women's tennis team plays at the Midwest Blast in Champaign, Ill., today through Sunday.
Lindblom 'Giving Back' to Local Charities
Former Purdue pitcher Josh Lindblom is "giving back" ... and four local charities will benefit from a Nov. 5 luncheon entitled "Community Makers: Duty Calls" at Bruno's restaurant as part of the lead-in to Military Appreciation Day for the Purdue-Iowa football game at Ross-Ade Stadium. Lindblom will serve as guest speaker, discussing his call to community service and how he and his wife, Aurielle, have used his platform as a Major League Baseball player with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers to provide school supplies and food for needy residents of Tippecanoe County.
Part of the proceeds from the luncheon will go to Food Finders of Lafayette, through the Josh Lindblom Foundation. Other programs benefitting are Honor Flight through the Lafayette Gold Star Mothers, Krannert School of Management's EBV Program (Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities) and the scholarship program of the National Football Foundation's Joe Tiller Chapter. Tickets for the luncheon are priced at $25 each and are available through several organizations (Food Finders, Gold Star Mothers, Krannert's EBV Program and the NFF), as well as online. The soccer team (8-9-1, 3-7-0 Big Ten) wraps up its season Saturday afternoon at Iowa ... The women's basketball team plays an exhibition game against Clarke at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mackey Arena. The Boilermakers are ranked No. 23 in the USA Today preseason coaches' poll. They have been ranked in at least one of the two national polls heading into 66 of their last 69 games under head coach Sharon Versyp. Senior guard Courtney Moses was named to the Big Ten preseason all-conference team ... On Monday at 7 p.m., the men's basketball team takes on Wayne State (Neb.) in exhibition action at Mackey ... Don't forget the Boiler Bridge Walk this afternoon. Unity Healthcare is supplying the gold stadium cups that the players and coaches will give out, while Kathy's Kandies will hand out sweet treats. The Bridge Walk gets under way when the football team arrives around 5:40 p.m., but fans should arrive early to get a good spot on the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge that spans the Wabash River between West Lafayette and Lafayette ... Ted Bishop, a 1976 Purdue graduate and current president of The PGA of America, was inducted into the Indiana Golf Hall of Fame on Oct. 22.
