The Purdue Student Government, in an effort to honor the heroes and victims of the September 11 tragedy and showcase the patriotism of Boilermaker fans, are selling commemorative T-shirts to be worn on the September 11 football game versus Ball State.
Order forms for the T-shirts were sent to all season ticket-holders. Shirts ordered can be picked up on Sept. 5 prior to kickoff against Syracuse, as well as immediately after the game. They can also be picked up prior to the game on Sept. 11. Two pick-up locations are available for fans: Room 112 in the Memorial Union, as well as the Memorial Mall. If you are not a season ticket-holder, T-shirts also can be purchased at the Thriftway Market located at Purdue West on SR 26 or at the PSG office in the Stewart Center, Room G6. The PSG office is open 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. T-shirts are five dollars, and the proceeds go to Purdue United Way.
Matt Klein, executive director of programming for PSG has high hopes for the T-shirt project. "Selling commemorative T-shirts was a way that we saw to blend Boiler Pride and patriotism together in order to show that Purdue University remembers," says Klein. "It is our hope that the success of the T-shirt sales will translate into significant support for United Way."
Prior to kickoff, a ceremony, video tribute and a moment of silence will be held to honor the victims and heroes of September 11, 2001.
In addition, the September 11 game is Band Day and Family Day. Purdue will play host to 25 Indiana high school bands, who will play together as a single unit during halftime. Along with the Purdue Musical Organization, the All-American Marching band will present "An American Salute, Remember 9/11," a special tribute concert immediately following the game at the Class of 1939 Water Sculpture.
A Jazz Tailgates concert will begin two and a half hours before kickoff at Slayter Center, followed by the "All-American" Marching Band 90 minutes prior to kickoff.
There are several other events scheduled for Family Day:
