Distinguished Scholars

July 15, 2010

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Forty-one Purdue student-athletes were honored as Distinguished Scholar Award recipients by the Big Ten Conference on Thursday.

It is just the second year for the award, which was established by the Big Ten faculty representatives to further promote the academic achievements of Big Ten student-athletes. The conference also recognizes Academic All-Big Ten team members for the fall, winter and spring sports.

In order to be eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award, recipients must be in at least their second academic year at the institution and have a minimum GPA of 3.7 for the previous academic year, excluding summer school. Of Purdue's 41 recipients, eight posted a perfect 4.0 GPA this year. Among the 11 member institutions, 484 student-athletes met the Distinguished Scholar criteria.

The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for their academic career. A total of 151 Boilermaker student athletes garnered Academic All-Big Ten honors during the 2009-10 school year.
