WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Thirty-one Purdue student-athletes were honored as Distinguished Scholar Award recipients by the Big Ten Conference today, including seven who earned perfect 4.0 GPAs in 2011-12.

In February of 2008, Big Ten Faculty Representatives established a conference academic recognition to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution. However, the Distinguished Scholar Award encompasses only student-athletes with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school.

A total of 587 student-athletes representing all 12 Big Ten schools met the criteria to be named a Distinguished Scholar this year.

The conference also recognizes Academic All-Big Ten team members for the fall, winter and spring sports. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for their academic career. A total of 158 Boilermaker student athletes garnered Academic All-Big Ten honors during the 2011-12 school year.
