WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue athletics department is proud to be a self-supporting auxiliary enterprise within the university. Its elite status was further solidified in a USA Today article on Wednesday. In the article, the reporters wrote, "Just 23 of 228 athletics departments at NCAA Division I public schools generated enough money on their own to cover their expenses in 2012. Of that group, 16 also received some type of subsidy." The seven departments that did not included Purdue, along with LSU, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State and Texas.

Women's Golf Under Way at NCAA's, Women's Tennis Goes Today

The women's golf team began play at the NCAA Stanford Regional yesterday and sits in third place out of 24 teams after recording a 291. The fourth-seeded Boilermakers trail the leader, No. 3 seed Vanderbilt, by just two strokes and are one stroke behind top-seed and top-ranked Southern California. Senior Paula Reto shot an even-par 71 and is tied for eighth place to lead the way for the Boilermakers. All five Purdue golfers are among the top 50. The women's tennis team squares off against South Carolina today at 11 a.m. in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Coral Gables, Fla.

Schenk NCAA-Bound

Junior Adam Schenk will represent the Purdue men's golf team at the NCAA Columbus Regional from May 16 to 18. Schenk is one of 10 individuals competing at the regional, along with the 13 qualifying teams. The low five teams and low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships in Atlanta from May 28 to June 2. Schenk earned first team All-Big Ten honors this season and was named to the conference All-Championships team after tying for fifth place. He leads the Boilermakers with a 73.44 stroke average this season.

Fielding Excellence

Purdue has five track and field athletes with field marks among the top 25 in the country this season: senior Geoff Davis (fifth in high jump), junior Nikki Nunn (12th in long jump), senior Jakob Engel (17th in shot put), redshirt freshman Chukwuebuka Enekwechi (19th in hammer throw) and freshman Coy Blair (25th in shot put). The Big Ten Championships begin today in Columbus, Ohio, and continue through Sunday.

Varsho, Monchek Named All-Big Ten

Junior outfielder Andie Varsho and senior outfielder Maia Monchek earned All-Big Ten honors in softball earlier this week. Varsho was named first team and Monchek second team. Varsho is the Boilermakers' first first team selection since outfielder Lindsey Rains in 2011 and the 11th in program history. Purdue opened Big Ten Tournament play yesterday and defeated Michigan State 8-5 in Lincoln, Neb. The 10th-seeded Boilermakers take on second-seeded and host Nebraska today at 8 p.m. ET.

Four Volleyball Players Selected for National Program

Libero Carly Cramer, middle blocker Kierra Jones and outside hitters Annie Drews and Valerie Nichol have been selected to the 48-player roster for the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Senior A2 Program. Purdue's four picks mark the most from any school. The A2 Program, which is available to athletes with collegiate eligibility remaining for the 2013 season, will take place in Dallas from June 25 to July 4 in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Girls' Junior National Championship. Cramer, Jones and Nichol are repeat A2 Program selections. Cramer participated in the program in 2011, while Jones and Nichol did so in 2012.

Major Success in the Minors

Three former Purdue baseball players who would have been seniors this season are excelling in the minor leagues. Outfielder Cameron Perkins leads the Florida State League (Class A Advanced) with 46 hits and 14 doubles while batting .354 (fifth in the league) for the Clearwater Threshers. He was named the Philadelphia Phillies' Minor League Player of the Week for the week of April 29 to May 5 ... Pitcher Nick Wittgren ranks second in the FSL with seven saves to go with a 1.06 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 17 innings for the Jupiter Hammerheads. Catcher Kevin Plawecki ranks second in the South Atlantic League (Class A) with a .398 batting average and 28 RBI while playing for the Savannah Sand Gnats. The volleyball team departs Sunday on a 12-day European tour. The Boilermakers will play six matches while visiting five countries: Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia, Italy and France ... The men's basketball team will play host to Boston College in the 15th-annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Dec. 4. Click here for Thursday's release on the non-conference schedule ... Former Purdue diver David Boudia has returned to active competition for the first time since winning two medals at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He currently is in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix and will go from there to Tallahassee, Fla., for the World Championships Trials from May 15 to 20. Boudia will be focusing strictly on the individual 10-meter platform at both competitions. He won the gold medal in that event in London, along with the bronze medal in synchronized 10-meter platform diving ... After being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, former Purdue running back Akeem Shavers was picked up by the New England Patriots. Offensive lineman Rick Schmeig signed with the Indianapolis Colts ... The men's lacrosse club team defeated Indiana 12-11 to win the Great Rivers Lacrosse Conference championship on May 5. Purdue rallied from an 11-7 fourth-quarter deficit to win its first title since it began playing lacrosse in 1970. Purdue takes on Colorado State in the national championship tournament beginning May 13 in Greenville, S.C.
