WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Big Ten Conference honored 620 student-athletes on Wednesday, naming them to the 2013 Winter Academic All-Big Ten team. The Boilermakers accounted for 47 names on that list, including 25 members of the Purdue women's swimming and diving team.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. Purdue men's swimming and diving produced two of the conference's nine 4.0 grade-point averages in Manuel Gutierrez and Jacob Robinson.
Headlining the list of 25 members of the Boilermaker women's swimming and diving team is 2013 NCAA Champion Casey Matthews. The five-time All-American won the 3-meter dive last week after winning the consolation final of the 1-meter dive the day before. Along with Matthews, national qualifiers Michelle Cabassol, Lauren Gustafson, Lauren Nichols and Rhiannon Sheets also made the conference academic list. Matthews and Gustafson set Purdue records in runner-up performances at the Big Ten Championships as well, as Matthews was second in the 3-meter dive, while Gustafson took second in the 100 freestyle.
Purdue women's basketball senior Drey Mingo adds yet another award to a long and distinguished list, including 2013 third-team All-Big Ten honors, a spot on the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team and being a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. Junior Courtney Moses joined Mingo as a third-team All-Big Ten honoree and helped lead the Boilermakers to the 2013 Big Ten Tournament title and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Jamie Bissett and Matt Friede lead the list of 12 Purdue men's swimming and diving honorees, heading to the NCAA Men's Championships this weekend in Indianapolis. Senior D.J. Byrd was one of three men's basketball players named academic all-conference, adding to his honorable mention All-Big Ten honor from the season. Junior Camden Eppert and sophomore Patrick Kissel top the list of five Purdue wrestlers on the list, both earning over 20 wins this season for the Boilermakers.
